SAN DIEGO 26, Central Washington 7
The University of San Diego Toreros improved to 2-0 for the first time in a full season since 2011 with a 26-7 win over Division II Central Washington (0-1) at Torero Stadium. Quarterback Grant Sergent led the Toreros’ offense with three passing touchdowns, connecting with Ja’Seem Reed, Cole Monach, and Lincoln High alum Kenyon Sims. Sergent threw for 231 yards, while Sims added 89 all-purpose yards and a 28-yard touchdown catch that opened the scoring.
"It feels great — a great team win overall," Reed said. "This is huge for the program."
After Central Washington briefly took a 7-6 lead, USD regained control with a 39-yard touchdown pass to Monach, sending them into halftime with a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. The third quarter saw a game-changing moment as defensive lineman Jae’Von Reels intercepted a pass and returned it for a pick-six.
"After I caught the ball, I don’t even remember everything," Reels recalled. "I just started running and hoping I get to the end zone."
"Linemen can dream about that, I’ve always dreamed about that. It just happened today."
USD’s defense dominated the second half, shutting down Central Washington and holding them scoreless after their early touchdown. Giovanni Iovino recorded 13 tackles, helping to stifle any attempt at a comeback.
Reed capped off the scoring with a 24-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter, as USD cruised to victory. "We knew we had them; we just had to execute," said Reed, emphasizing the team’s preparation and focus throughout the game.
Looking ahead, the Toreros will enjoy a bye week before traveling to North Dakota to take on the Fighting Hawks on September 21.
Moorpark 17, PALOMAR 16
In a nail-biter at the new Palomar College stadium, Moorpark edged out a 17-16 victory, powered by a late-game surge. After trailing for much of the contest, Moorpark (1-0) erased a 16-3 deficit in the fourth quarter, thanks to a one-yard touchdown run by Savion Covington and a clutch five-yard touchdown pass from Kaydn Parr to Ryan Johnson with under three minutes remaining. Palomar (0-1) had controlled the game behind three field goals from Jonathon Meyers and a Quincy Herron touchdown catch, but Moorpark's defense stepped up late, sealing the win. The Comets' offense outgained Moorpark, but costly turnovers proved to be the difference.
East Los Angeles 34, GROSSMONT 7
East Los Angeles (1-0) kicked off their 2024 campaign with a resounding 34-7 victory over the Grossmont Griffins (0-1), driven by two defensive touchdowns from Timmy Fleishood and an 80-yard bomb from Daunte Bell to Chris Hicks. Grossmont’s only score came in the second quarter on a 25-yard pass from Mount Miguel alum Matt Barton to Evan Rearick, but their offense was stifled for most of the game, committing five turnovers. Fleishood's two pick-sixes in the fourth quarter iced the game, while Tanner Anderson added a late rushing touchdown. East LA's defense was relentless, holding the Griffins to 177 total yards.
SAN DIEGO MESA 65, San Bernardino Valley 0
The San Diego Mesa Olympians (1-0) emphatically opened their 2024 season with a 65-0 shutout victory over San Bernardino Valley. The Olympians wasted no time, scoring 34 points in the first quarter alone. Quarterback Jax Leatherwood (Scripps Ranch) led the charge, throwing two touchdown passes, including a five-yard strike to Nathan Porter and a seven-yard toss to Troy Bassler. Special Teams also contributed early when Dylan Curry (Poway) returned a blocked punt 16 yards for a touchdown, putting Mesa ahead 14-0 just minutes into the game.
The scoring frenzy continued for Mesa as Danny Davis added a seven-yard rushing touchdown. Reggie Johnson scored on a four-yard run to cap off an explosive first quarter. In the second, Johnson connected with Santiago Salas for a 46-yard touchdown, and Robert Petrich (Granite Hills) hit a 28-yard field goal to extend the lead to 44-0 by halftime.
Mesa kept their foot on the gas in the second half, with Kendall Ayersman and Derek McClintic (Vista) finding the end zone on the ground, while the defense held San Bernardino Valley (0-1) to just 33 total yards of offense and -39 rushing yards. The victory showcased Mesa's dominance on both sides of the ball, as they outgained SBVC 360-33, while the Olympians’ defense recorded two sacks and a fumble recovery.
Oregon State 21, SAN DIEGO STATE 0
San Diego State (1-1) couldn’t find an answer for Oregon State’s dominant rushing game in a 21-0 loss at Snapdragon Stadium. The Beavers controlled the game from the start, racking up 237 rushing yards, with touchdowns from Jam Griffin and Anthony Hankerson. Oregon State (2-0) outgained SDSU 420-179 in total yards and held the ball for over 41 minutes, leaving the Aztecs' offense little opportunity to get going. Despite a solid effort by the Aztec defense, including Chris Johnson’s career-high nine tackles and a forced fumble, SDSU was shut out for just the third time since 2006.
The Aztecs' best chance to score came in the third quarter when freshman quarterback Danny O’Neil led them to the Oregon State seven-yard line, but a fumble on a quarterback keeper ended the drive. Oregon State responded with a 98-yard scoring drive that put the game out of reach. A blocked punt and a 21-yard touchdown pass from Gevani McCoy to Bryce Caufield in the fourth quarter sealed the 21-0 victory for the Beavers, as SDSU struggled to find any offensive rhythm.
