San Diego Mesa ends season with a dominate win in the Strawberry Bowl
Santa Maria, CA - The San Diego Mesa Olympians (7-4) held off a second half rally to defeat the Allan Hancock Bulldogs (7-4) 42-20 in the 2023 SCFA Strawberry Bowl on Tuesday evening.
Mesa got on the board first with a two-yard touchdown run from Tavian Tate in the first quarter. They then extended the lead to 14-0 later in the first when Jordin Young returned a punt 76 yards for a touchdown.
In the second quarter, Olympians' quarterback James Odom connected with Danny Davis for a six-yard score. The Grossmont High alum also had a rushing touchdown in the quarter as Mesa opened up a 28-0 lead.
Allan Hancock finally got on the board late in the second quarter with a 14-yard touchdown run from Caden Harris. They cut further into the lead in the third quarter, with Harris breaking off an 18-yard touchdown run, part of a quick 75-yard drive. But the Olympians responded right away, with Odom hitting Kader Diop for a 36-yard touchdown pass on the ensuing drive to make it 35-13.
The fourth quarter saw Tate add another rushing score for Mesa, while Hancock scored late on a four-yard run by John Allen but could not complete the comeback.
Odom had an impressive game for Mesa, completing 12 of 18 passes for 161 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 131 yards and a score. Tate found the end zone twice, while defensive back Brandon Worsley was impactful, recording an interception, forced fumble and fumble recovery.
Harris rushed for 152 yards for Allan Hancock but it wasn't enough, as key turnovers and struggles on third and fourth down stalled their offense.
