Matthew Barton had a remarkable senior night, delivering a six-touchdown performance that propelled the Mount Miguel Matadors (7-1, 2-0 GVL) to a 46-20 victory over the reigning Grossmont Valley League champion El Capitan Vaqueros (5-4, 2-1 GVL) on Thursday night. This win now places the Matadors in first place with two games left in the season and positions them to potentially secure their first league title since 2013.
On the opening kickoff, a surprise onside kick by El Capitan was successfully recovered by Chance LaChappa. The stolen possession paved the way for Brandt Barker's 40-yard touchdown pass to Jonathan Biffle, giving the Vaqueros a 7-0 lead with 10:23 remaining in the first quarter.
However, Mount Miguel responded with a long drive, resulting in Matthew Barton connecting with Braylon Cardwell for a 15-yard touchdown, leveling the score at 7-7 with 2:50 left in the opening quarter.
The following possession saw a screen pass to Julian May resulting in the ball being punched from his arm by Christian Lopez. Johnny Castro recovered the loose ball and sprinted it back for a Matadors' touchdown, ending a wild first quarter with a 13-7 lead for the Matadors.
After a turnover on downs, Barton registered his second touchdown, targeting fellow senior Jeremiah Castillo in the corner of the end zone with a 20-yard pass, expanding the Matadors' lead to 20-7 with 5:39 remaining in the first half. Castillo, who ranked fifth in the section for receiving yards entering the game, concluded his final regular season home game with three touchdown receptions.
Barton continued his impressive performance by connecting with Parris Vernon (2 TD RECs) on a 28-yard touchdown pass just before halftime, extending their lead to 27-7.
Trailing 34-7 late in the third quarter, Barker's pass to May just shy of the end zone set up a one-yard quarterback dive to cut the lead to 34-14 with 5:07 left in the third. Barker was responsible for all three Vaqueros' touchdowns (2 passes, 1 rush), including a second connection to Biffle.
