Rebellion defeats Seattle 21-12 in season-opening "Revenge Game"

MURRIETA, CA - The San Diego Rebellion waited 700 days to avenge their previous outing, which ended in a heartbreaking 7-0 loss to the Seattle Majestics, and would eventually knock them out of contention for the 2019 WNFC Playoffs.

With the 2020 season getting canceled due to COVID-19 concerns, the Rebellion had wait another full season for their chance to run it back.

Saturday night the new-look Rebellion (1-0) got the redemption they been patiently waiting for as they dominated the majority of their 21-12 victory over the visiting Majestics (0-1) to open the much-anticipated 2021 season.

After a scoreless first quarter, Knengi Martin finished a 31-yard drive with a seven-yard quarterback keeper for the game's opening touchdown.

Still leading 7-0 in the third quarter, Martin took off for 19 yards and her second score of the game to add to San Diego's lead 14-0.

On the ensuing drive, the defense added an exclamation point to its stellar performance with a 30-yard pick-six by linebacker Stephanie Lopez, giving San Diego a commanding 21-0 lead to start the fourth quarter.

Looking to rally back, the Majestics prevented a shutout with a 50-yard fumble recovery touchdown by April Arnold. Mykaleen Hiura's two-point conversion attempt was intercepted in the end zone by Ashlee Bean, who nearly returned it the other way before getting caught at the one-yard line, keeping the score at 21-6.

As time expired, Seattle scored on a 37-yard touchdown pass from Hiura to Adrienne Wilson.

The Rebellion will travel to Seattle for the rematch in June. Meanwhile, they enjoy a bye week before a road meeting against the Phoenix Prowlers on May 15th.
