SDCCU Stadium (02/24/2019) The San Diego Fleet improves to 2-1 and ties for 1st place in the West Division standings after putting away the San Antonio Commanders (1-2) 31-11.
Fleet running back Ja’Quan Gardner had another big game with 122 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. His 83-yard burst to the end zone with 8:03 left in the third quarter is the longest scoring play in The Alliance this season.
Phillip Nelson threw two touchdown passes to Nelson Spruce, while linebacker AJ Tarpley scored off a 27-yard interception return.
San Diego got off to a bad start after Nelson's interception on the first play from scrimmage led to a 47-yard touchdown strike from Commanders' quarterback Logan Woodside to Mekale McKay, who led all receivers with a game-high 91 yards on four catches.
San Antonio's 14-yard touchdown pass would have extended their early lead to 14-0, but it was called back due to a holding penalty.
The Fleet got on the board with a 94-yard drive that ended with a three-yard touchdown pass from Nelson to Spruce, but it was linebacker A.J. Tarpley's 27-yard pick-six that gave them their first lead of the game with 11:02 left in the first half.
Following a Commanders' three-and-out, Nelson and Spruce connected again for an 18-yard touchdown with 2:09 seconds remaining in the half. A second rushing conversion by Terrell Watson gave the Fleet a 22-8 halftime lead.
The Fleet will be seeking their third straight victory when they visit the Memphis Express (0-3) next Saturday at 5:00 p.m. pacific time.
