Prep Football Games to Watch: Playoff Week 2

Can 11-seed Grossmont slay another Division I giant?

#11 Grossmont Foothillers (4-7) at #3 Helix Highlanders (6-4)
Division I Quarterfinal

Grossmont haven't been victorious over their longtime East County rival since 1991, but after last week's first-round upset over Madison, the Foothillers should come into this game highly confident.

Helix is coming off a first-round bye after ending the regular season with a loss to Steele Canyon. Its four losses are the most in a season since 2009.

Publisher's Pick: Helix

#4 San Marcos Knights (8-1) at #1 Torrey Pines Falcons (9-0)
Open Division Semifinal

The new four-team Open Division playoffs kick off with a rematch from week nine. Like several games that took place that Friday, it was called off due to lightning and resulted in a no contest.

While San Marcos led 10-7 at the half, we'll never know how the game would have ended, but with both teams playing for their first-ever appearance in the Open Division Final, we should find out who the better team really is.

Publisher's Pick: Torrey Pines

#3 Carlsbad Lancers (6-3) at #2 Cathedral Catholic Dons (9-1)
Open Division Semifinal

The other side of the Open Division bracket features Cathedral Catholic seeking payback from last season's loss to the Lancers in the Division I quarterfinal.

This will be the third postseason meeting between the teams since 2015.

Publisher's Pick: Cathedral Catholic

#7 Oceanside Pirates (6-5) at #2 Eastlake Titans (9-1)
Division I Quarterfinal

The last time these teams met was in the 2013 Open Division semifinal. Down 30-7 at halftime, Oceanside rallied with 26 unanswered points. The contest came down to a game-winning field goal as time expired.

That was John McFadden's final game before resigning as Eastlake's head coach, but he returned this year to lead the Titans to its best season since then.

The Pirates visit Chula Vista coming off a first round win over Otay Ranch.

Publisher's Pick: Eastlake

#5 Steele Canyon Cougars (9-2) at #4 St. Augustine Saints (7-3)
Division I Quarterfinal

With consecutive wins over traditional powers (Helix & El Camino), the defending state champion Cougars are looking to stay hot when they visit Mesa College to take on another powerhouse in St. Augustine.

Since suffering a last-second loss to Madison in week nine, the Saints have outscored their opponents by a combined 86-6.

Publisher's Pick: St. Augustine
