Video: Surge hold on to edge Los Angeles in season opener

LOS ANGELES, CA (04/01/2017) Competing in its first football game since 2015, the San Diego Surge (1-0) needed a defensive stop near their own goal-line as time expired to pull off a 41-40 win over the Los Angeles Warriors (0-1) Saturday night.

"We knew we were walking into a dogfight with this team," Surge head coach Mike Suggett told us after the game.

"You can't take a year off and expect to be as dominate as you were in the past."

The Warriors struck first on a 34-yard touchdown run by Priscilla Gardner, but the Surge answered on the ensuing kickoff with an 89-yard touchdown return by rookie Dejanae Harvey to tie the game 6-6.

Following a fumble recovery by the Surge defense, Harvey found the end zone again, this time on a nine-yard jet sweep run.

A fourth down stop on the ensuing possession set up a 45-yard touchdown pass from Melissa Gallegos to Kaycee Clark, giving San Diego a 20-6 lead to end the first quarter.

With the help of  a few turnovers and a dominating rushing performance from Gardner, Los Angeles rallied back with three straight touchdowns, and the Surge found themselves trailing 26-20 with 4:46 left in the first half.

Gallegos targeted Clark again for a 34-yard scoring connection to help San Diego lead 27-26 at halftime.

While the Surge were outscored 14-7 in the third quarter, it was the lone touchdown in the fourth that proved to be the game-winner.

During a play that was intended to be a sack-saving pass to the back of the end zone, Gallegos got the ball to Harvey, who beat multiple defenders to the end zone for her third score of the night.

"We were lucky to get out with a win tonight, but it doesn't matter how we won, we just got to improve now," Suggett added.

Next Saturday the Surge will hit the road again for a first-time meeting with the Inland Empire Ravens.
