The No. 3 Cathedral Catholic Dons (4-0) ended the No. 1 Helix Highlanders' (2-2) long standing reign on top of the SDFN rankings after coming back from a 28-7 third quarter deficit by racking up 28 unanswered points, earning a 35-28 victory at Manchester Stadium Friday night.
After Carson Baker's one-yard touchdown pass to Scott Young gave Helix a 21-0 lead in the second quarter, Jordan Genmark-Heath put Cathedral on the board with a 1-yard run, cutting the lead to 21-7 at the half.
Early in the third quarter, the Highlanders attempted to pull away after Rashaad Scott took a punt 67 yards to the end zone to make it 28-7, but two touchdown strikes from Tate Haynes (Antoine Lee for 29 yards & Shawn Poma for 27 yards) put the Dons back in the game.
Capitalizing off a fumbled snap during a Helix punt attempt, Adam Eastwood punched in a two-yard score to tied the contest 28-28 with 13 seconds left in the third quarter.
Momentum continued to work for the home team in the fourth quarter as Je'Von Figaro tipped Baker's pass and returned it 37 yards for the game-winning touchdown.
