2014 Recap: 14-1 CIF-SD Division II Champions (5-0 Grossmont Hills, 1st)
With a roster full of highly-talented seniors, Ron Burner led El Capitan to its most successful season in program history. After dethroning Helix as the top team in East County, the Vaqueros went on to win their first-ever CIF section title. Despite having enough points in the power rankings to qualify for the Open Division playoffs, the Vaqueros settled for the Division II crown. El Cap advanced to the Division III State Championship game where they led Campolindo (Moraga, CA) 28-7 late in the third quarter, but allowed 28 unanswered points in a heartbreaking defeat.
2015 Outlook
With every impact player from their state championship run moving on, the odds of repeating the success of 2014 are probably slim to none, but that doesn't mean El Capitan won't have a decent squad this year. How they perform in the season opener against Madison should answer any questions we have about the new-look Vaqueros. Either the graduations will take their toll, or the pride of Lakeside will carry on their newfound status as one of the top teams in the county.
Burner returns four offensive linemen, his entire defensive line, and two linebackers. He's also adding Helix transfer Phoenix Cates, who will compete to succeed Brad Cagle as the starting quarterback. Voids at the skill positions will be filled by players promoted from JV and varsity returners who were backups last season.
