Toreros avoid second half rally to top Butler

Sophomore CB Jamal Agnew (#26) picked off two passes against Butler, he has four on the season.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (10/18/2014) The University of San Diego Toreros (5-1, 3-1 PFL) led 21-0 going into halftime, but the Butler Bulldogs (3-4, 1-3 PFL) rallied back in the second half outscoring the Toreros 21-6. Thanks to a pair of field goals by David Last and a defensive stand during the closing seconds, the Toreros managed to escape with their fourth straight win.

Quarterback Keith Williams, who sat out last week's contest with a hand injury, completed 20 of 28 passes for 251 yards and a four-yard touchdown to freshman tight end Ross Dwelley that gave the Toreros a 7-0 lead with 6:44 left in the half.

The Toreros piled on by scoring on their next two second quarter drives. Two consecutive three-and-outs led to a two-yard run by fullback Chris Campano, and a 21-yard reverse sweep by receiver Parker Mays, giving the Toreros a 21-0 lead at the half.

A string of second half miscues began when Williams threw a wild pass that was intercepted by Ethan Brunhofer and returned to USD's 17-yard line. The Bulldogs capitalized immediately with a 17-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Malcom Weaver to Guy DiBalsamo on the first play from scrimmage, cutting the Torero lead to 21-7 early in the third quarter. Williams was picked off again on the following drive, but a three-and-out prevented further damage.

After a 34-yard field goal by Last extended USD's lead to 24-7, the Bulldogs cut it to 24-14 with a 57-yard touchdown run by DiBalsamo. Another Last field goal, this time a 24-yarder, was answered by a 25-yard touchdown pass from Weaver to Derek O'Connor to make it 27-21 with 2:07 left to play. A USD punt gave the Bulldogs another opportunity complete their comeback bid, but the Torero defense made a much needed stop during the closing seconds to seal the win.
