QUALCOMM STADIUM (10/05/2014) After running back Donald Brown left the game with a concussion, Branden Oliver took over and gave the injury-plagued run game a much needed boost.
The rookie free agent out of Buffalo carried the ball 19 times for 114 yards and added four catches for 68 yards in his breakout performance. He also recorded his first two career touchdowns as the San Diego Chargers (4-1) dominated the New York Jets (1-4) for their fourth straight win.
Phillip Rivers added to his MVP contention completing 20 of 28 passes for 288 yards, two touchdowns, and his first interception since the second quarter of week one. His top targets were Antonio Gates, who caught four passes for 60 yards and the first two touchdowns of the game, and Malcom Floyd, who finished with three big catches for 72 yards.
The game ball should go to the entire Charger defense who held the Jets to just 151 total yards and pitched the NFL's first shutout of the season. The last Chargers shutout took place on Dec. 12, 2010 with a 31-0 rout over Kansas City.
The Jets' offense didn't reach Chargers' territory until a pass interference call late in the fourth quarter put them on the 38-yard line.
Quarterback Geno Smith was benched for Michael Vick after completing just four passes for 27 yards and an interception during the first half. Vick didn't perform much better completing 8 of 19 passes for 47 yards.
Next week the Chargers head to Oakland to take on the win-less Raiders in the first AFC West contest of the season.
