2013 Prep Football Rankings: Week 10

 Eastlake will try to hold off rival Olympian this Friday to avoid being the third consecutive #1 team to fall.

San Pasqual's reign as the top ranked team in the county lasted just one week after suffering its first loss of the season to unranked Rancho Buena Vista 38-36.
 
Imperial senior running back Royce Freeman became the San Diego section's all-time leading rusher during a 49-14 win over Calexico last Friday. Despite only playing in the first half, Freeman rushed for 134 yards on 11 carries bringing his career total to 6,777 yards.

Aztecs fall to Fresno State in Overtime

Junior WR Ezell Ruffin (#3) had a big day (10 catches for 181 yards), but it wasn't enough.


 
QUALCOMM STADIUM (10/27/2013) Down 28-14 in the fourth quarter, the San Diego State Aztecs (3-4, 2-1 MWC) rallied back to force overtime. Unfortunately they couldn't hold off the Fresno State Bulldogs (7-0, 4-0 MWC) who pulled off the 35-28 win to remain undefeated.

Toreros come up big against Butler, 42-14

TORERO STADIUM (10/26/2013) The University of San Diego Toreros (5-3, 4-1 PFL) kept their Pioneer Football League title hopes alive with a dominating win over the Butler Bulldogs (6-3, 4-1 PFL). The Toreros got off to a 35-0 lead before Butler finally got on the board with 15 seconds left in the first half.

With the win, the Toreros are now tied with Butler, Dayton, and Marist for first place in the PFL.

Senior Mason Mills passed for 407 yards bringing his career total to 10,004, making him the first player in school history to go over the 10,000-yard mark (5th in PFL history). Mills is also USD's all-time career leader in passing attempts (1,226) and completions (816).

2013 Prep Football Rankings: Week Nine

 
 Top Storylines

The San Pasqual Golden Eagles are flying high after knocking off top-ranked Mission Hills 13-10 in a double overtime thriller. The Eagles are now the third team in the county to claim the #1 ranking this season.

No stranger to marquee matchups, undefeated Ramona will be looking to make a huge statement when they host Oceanside in a battle of North County powerhouses.

Imperial running back Royce Freeman rushed for 267 yards and four touchdowns during a 29-10 win over Brawley. The Oregon commit is now 51 yards and six touchdowns away from being the San Diego section's all-time leader in both rushing categories.

Toreros fall to Dayton 45-38 in double OT


DAYTON, OHIO (10/19/2013) Senior quarterback Mason Mills passed Josh Johnson as USD's all-time passing leader, senior running back Joe Ferguson put up 214 all-purpose yards, and junior receiver Reggie Bell added another 100-yard performance to his stellar season.

But it was all for nothing as the University of San Diego Toreros (4-3, 3-1 PFL) failed to hold off the Dayton Flyers (5-2, 3-1 PFL) in double overtime, suffering its first Pioneer Football League loss of the season.

Coming off a thrilling last second 35-33 win over Marist, the Toreros will be looking to keep their nine-game PFL win streak alive when they hit the road to face the Dayton Flyers.

While the Toreros control their own destiny in the Pioneer Football League title race, the Flyers will desperately need a win in order to stay in it.

The last time these teams met was last season with the Toreros rolling to a 41-9 blowout win at Torero Stadium. Quarterback Mason Mills set a PFL and school record with 511 yards passing. His main target Sam Hoekstra also set a school record with 246 yards receiving. While the Toreros won the last two games, the Flyers lead the all-time series 14-6.

Toreros defeat Marist 35-33 on last-second field goal

TORERO STADIUM (10/12/2013) Down 33-32 with just five seconds left to play, kicker David Last's 34-yard field goal went wide right as time expired. The Marist bench rushed the field to celebrate their first win over the University of San Diego Toreros in team history.
 
The celebration was cut short after the officials called a roughing the kicker penalty.
 
With his second opportunity, the sophomore from Valley Center nailed it from 28 yards to give the Toreros a 35-33 win, a 3-0 start in the Pioneer Football League, and a 9-0 all-time record against the Red Foxes.

4th quarter rally help Aztecs defeat Air Force 27-20


AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (10/10/2013) Freshman running back Donnel Pumphrey exploded for a 10-yard touchdown run with 1:39 remaining in the game to help the San Diego State Aztecs (3-3, 2-0 Mountain West) pull off a 27-20 come-from-behind victory over the Air Force Falcons (1-6, 0-5 MW) on Thursday night.

Down 20-6 in the fourth quarter, the Aztecs put up 21 unanswered points to escape with the win despite being plagued with special teams woes (2 unsuccessful PATs, 1 missed FG) and inconsistent play throughout the game.

San Diego State is now 2-151-1 in team history when trailing by 14 or more points in the fourth quarter.

USD hands Mercer its first loss of the season

TORERO STADIUM (10/05/2013) Senior quarterback Mason Mills completed 23 out of 27 passes for 413 yards and three touchdowns to help lead the University of San Diego Toreros (3-2, 2-0 PFL) to a 45-13 win over the Mercer Bears (4-1, 1-1 PFL) Saturday afternoon.

Mercer is playing in its first season of football since 1941. This was also their first road trip after opening the season with four straight home games.

Aztecs defeat Nevada in overtime, again

Qualcomm Stadium (10/04/2013) San Diego High alum Eric Judge caught a 13-yard pass from quarterback Quinn Kaehler in overtime to help the San Diego State Aztecs (2-3, 1-0 MW) come away with a 51-44 victory over the Nevada Wolf Pack (3-3, 2-1 MW) Friday night.
 
The Aztecs held a 44-23 lead in the fourth quarter, but the Wolf Pack rallied with 21 unanswered points to force the game into overtime.
