QUALCOMM STADIUM (12/26/2013) Utah State senior running back Joey DeMartino rushed for 143 yards and a touchdown to help his Aggies (9-5) secure a 21-14 win over Northern Illinois (12-2) in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl Thursday night.
The Mt. Carmel alum set a Poinsettia Bowl record for the longest rush with a 58-yard run in the first quarter. His performance earned him offensive MVP honors.
After two Nick Diaz field goals (32 & 39 yards) put the Aggies up 6-0, Heisman Trophy finalist Jordan Lynch scored on a one-yard run to give the Huskies a 7-6 lead going into halftime.
In the third quarter, Lynch was picked off by Aggies safety Brian Suite. That set up a five-yard touchdown connection from Darell Garretson to Brandon Swindell to help the Aggies regain the lead 13-7.
Utah State turned the ball over twice but Northern Illinois was unable to capitalize.
The Aggies sealed the deal with a 16-play, 80-yard drive that ended with DeMartino's 1-yard touchdown run and a successful two-point conversion with 4:44 left to play.
Lynch found sophomore receiver Juwan Brescacin for a 15-yard touchdown pass to cut the Aggies' lead to 21-14, but a failed onside kick ended their comeback attempt.
