Toreros defeat Marist 35-33 on last-second field goal

TORERO STADIUM (10/12/2013) Down 33-32 with just five seconds left to play, kicker David Last's 34-yard field goal went wide right as time expired. The Marist bench rushed the field to celebrate their first win over the University of San Diego Toreros in team history.

 

The celebration was cut short after the officials called a roughing the kicker penalty.

 

With his second opportunity, the sophomore from Valley Center nailed it from 28 yards to give the Toreros a 35-33 win, a 3-0 start in the Pioneer Football League, and a 9-0 all-time record against the Red Foxes.
 

Trailing 20-5 early in the third quarter, the Toreros put up four unanswered touchdowns highlighted by a 62-yard connection from Mason Mills to Reggie Bell. The Toreros led 32-20 with 14:39 left in the fourth quarter.

 

After striking back with 13 unanswered points of their own, Marist regained the lead with 5:19 remaining in the game.

 

Down 33-32, the Torero offense drove 64 yards to set up the game-winning field goal.

Led by Blake Oliaro and Steve Gargiulo, the defensive line had a monster performance totaling six sacks and eight tackles for losses.

 

For the second straight week, more than one Torero hit the 100-yard receiving mark. Junior Reggie Bell finished with four catches for 104 yards and a touchdown. Brandon White caught five passes for 100 yards.
