Stetson is playing in its first season of football since the program folded after the 1956 season.
Joe Ferguson kicked off a big day for the USD ground attack with a 37-yard touchdown run to end the opening drive. The senior finished with 91 yards rushing and added another touchdown on a 40-yard run in the second quarter.
The USD offense finished with 624 total yards but turned the ball over three times. Stetson was unable to capitalize thanks to a shutout performance by the Torero defense. The Hatters were only allowed 161 yards of offense, including just 10 total rushing yards.
Senior quarterback Mason Mills finished the game completing 18 out of 20 passes for 269 yards and two touchdowns.
Despite being subbed out late in the third quarter, Mills' performance was enough to pass up former USD standout Josh Johnson as the team's all-time career leader in passing attempts (1,078). Johnson finished his USD career with 1,065 attempts and 724 completions from 2004-07. Mills needs just four completions to pass Johnson in that category.
Junior wide receiver Reggie Bell caught five passes for 96 yards, just four yards shy of his fourth consecutive 100-yard performance this season. His most amazing catch took place in the second quarter when he saved an interception by grabbing the ball out of a Stetson defender's hands.
Junior Brandon White finished with three catches for 29 yards and two touchdowns.
After going the first three games of the season without recording an interception, senior safety and team captain Robbie Beathard put an end to USD's drought in the third quarter. His 20-yard return helped set up a 22-yard field goal by sophomore kicker David Last.
In the fourth quarter, junior cornerback Yogi Hale added to the total with his first interception as a Torero. He returned it 29 yards before getting caught at the Stetson six-yard line. That set up a six-yard touchdown run by redshirt freshman and San Pasqual product Tyler Tony.
Next week the Toreros take on another PFL newcomer when the Mercer Bears (4-0, 1-0 PFL) come to town for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff at Torero Stadium. The Bears are coming off a huge 31-17 home win over defending PFL co-champion Drake. This is their first football season since 1941.
