Prep Football Preview: Oceanside Pirates @ St. Augustine Saints

#1 Oceanside Pirates at #8 St. Augustine Saints
Friday, August, 30 2013 7:00 p.m.
San Diego Mesa College

In front of what should be a packed crowd at Merrill Douglas Stadium, two of last season's participants in the San Diego Section finals will face off for the first time in 16 years.

After leading Oceanside to their 14th section title, Silver Pigskin winning quarterback Israel “Tofi” Paopao took his talents to Florida International. The Pirate's offense will now be led by senior quarterback Josh Harris, a transfer from Helix who is no stranger to replacing Silver Pigskin winners. When 2011 winner Brandon Lewis graduated after a run to the state title, Harris took over the starting job and led the Highlanders to a 10-1 record.

His primary target this season will be senior wide receiver Mikah Holder. Holder is a shifty deep threat who can also make plays at the cornerback position. Although he’ll miss catching passes from Paopao, the San Diego State commit should continue to put up big numbers with Harris leading the way.

St. Augustine is coming off a 10-3 season that ended with a loss to Madison in the San Diego Section Division IV finals. With a core of their key players returning, another run to the finals wouldn't be a crazy prediction for the Saints.

Sophomore running back Elijah Preston returns to lead the Saints' rushing attack after a breakout freshman year where he rushed for 1,534 yards and 14 touchdowns. Despite his small stature, he can power his way through both holes and defenders en route to a big gain.

The Saints' defense will feature two players who are related to former San Diego Chargers linebackers who wore number 55. Junior cornerback Frank Buncom IV (Grandson of Frank Buncom II, 1962-1967) and sophomore linebacker Quinn Seau (Nephew of Junior Seau, 1990-2002) will play key roles in trying to slow down Oceanside's explosive offense.

This Saturday, the defending Pioneer Football League co-champion Toreros will open the season on the road against Cal Poly for the second year straight. This will only be the third meeting between the teams with the Mustangs owning a 2-0 advantage in the series. In last season’s opener, the Mustangs rolled to a 41-14 win after putting up 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter.

First year head coach Dale Lindsey hopes to lead the Toreros to a third consecutive PFL title and an automatic berth to the 2013 FCS playoffs. The former defensive coordinator returns 11 starters from last year’s squad that finished the season on a six-game win streak.

The Mustangs enter the season ranked No. 11 in the NCAA Division I FCS preseason coaches’ poll and No. 14 in the TSN media poll. They will be led by their fifth year head coach Tim Walsh who returns 17 starters from last season’s 9-3 campaign where they captured a share of the Big Sky title in their first year as conference members.

Cornerback Battleground: San Diego State

December 20, 2012 - #35 King Holder eyes his first career interception at the SDCCU Poinsettia Bowl.

2012 MWC Defensive Rankings

SCORING DEFENSE (3rd)
PASS DEFENSE (7th)
RUSH DEFENSE (1st)
PASS EFFICIENCY DEFENSE (4th)
RED ZONE DEFENSE (3rd)
TOTAL DEFENSE (3rd)

While the defending Mountain West co-champion San Diego State Aztecs return nine starters to their stout defense this season, there is a huge void in the secondary that sticks out like a sore thumb.

“On defense, we’ve got one area of concern – at cornerback,” head coach Rocky Long said. “We don’t have any corners who proved they can play. Other than that, everything looks pretty good.”

Will the Aztecs be able to make much needed improvements on their pass defense while replacing two senior starting cornerbacks? A run towards a second straight conference title could depend on it.

Here’s a breakdown of one of the most intriguing position battles taking place this month during Aztecs fall camp.

USD Toreros prepare for 2013 season with high expectations and playoff hopes

March 9, 2013 - USD players and staff gather around first-year head coach Dale Lindsey after a spring practice session.

A new era in the University of San Diego football program will begin when the team reports to camp on Tuesday.

Under the direction of first-year head coach Dale Lindsey, the Toreros will be looking to earn their third straight Pioneer Football League title, along with their first playoff bid since 1973. With Lindsey inheriting 11 players who started seven or more games last season, the Toreros will be expected to do just that.
