Nov. 19, 2011 - USD Toreros celebrate their fourth PFL title after a 23-14 win over Jacksonville at Torero Stadium.
The University of San Diego Toreros was picked to win the 2013 Pioneer Football League championship in a preseason coaches poll released Tuesday. If the coaches are correct, the Toreros will be the first team in PFL history to earn an automatic bid to the new 24-team FCS Playoffs.
The Toreros received five first-place votes and 111 out of 121 maximum points. Butler was picked to finish second while Drake and Jacksonville tied for third.
The Toreros finished the 2012 season 8-3 overall and 7-1 in the PFL to earn a share of the league title in a three-way tie with Drake and Butler.
In his first season as the head coach, Dale Lindsey will have 11 returning starters on his roster, including six on the offensive side of the ball. Senior quarterback Mason Mills (3,106 yards & 20 TDs) will lead the offense while linebacker Zach Devaney (62 tackles) and senior defensive end Blake Oliaro (39 tackles & 7 sacks) anchors the front seven on defense.
