Going into their third season of existence, the San Diego Surge have already put themselves among the elite franchises in women’s football. With an all-time record of 23-1 and a hard fought win in last season’s WFA National Championship game, the Surge should be the early favorite to repeat as champions.
But with a new roster and the imaginary target on their back that come along with being a defending champion, the Surge might be in for the toughest season of their short but stellar history.
The 2013 campaign kicks off with a trip to Los Angeles for a match-up with the Pacific Warriors. This will be the sixth meeting between these teams with the Surge leading the all-time series 5-0. The last meeting took place in the second round of the 2012 WFA playoffs with the Surge rolling to a 48-0 victory.
The Surge is coming off an undefeated season that ended with a 40-36 win over the Chicago Force in the WFA National Championship. Both sides of the ball showed dominance throughout the season averaging 53.6 points per game on offense while only allowing an average of seven points per game on defense. They also shut out their opponent in eight of their 12 games.
