USD Introduce New Head Coach Dale Lindsey


ALCALA PARK (12/29/2012) The University of San Diego introduced former Chargers defensive coordinator Dale Lindsey as its new head football coach at a press conference held at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. Lindsey will be the 13th head coach in USD football history replacing Ron Caragher who left to become the head coach at San Jose State University.

2012 Holiday Bowl Recap: UCLA vs. Baylor

 
 
QUALCOMM STADIUM (12/27/2012) Sophomore running back Lache Seastrunk rushed for 138 yards and a touchdown to help Baylor (8-5) defeat UCLA (9-5) 49-26 in the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl.
 
The Baylor defense played a huge role in the win totaling six sacks, 12 tackles for losses, and 11 pass break ups.

Chargers pass rush come up big against Jets

 
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (12/23/2012) The Chargers' win over the New York Jets in their final road game of the season came with a few milestones.

The defense recorded 11 sacks against Jets quarterback Greg McElroy who was starting for the first time in his NFL career. It was the most sacks in a single game this season and tied a team record set in 1986.
 
Late in the third quarter, tight end Antonio Gates caught a 34-yard touchdown pass that set a new team record for career touchdown receptions (82), breaking a tie with Hall of Fame receiver Lance Alworth.
 
Michael Spurlock set the tone with a 63-yard punt return for the first score of the game.

Two Shonn Green touchdown runs gave the Jets a 14-7 lead going into the second quarter, but the Chargers went on a 20-3 run to pick up the win and finish the season 4-4 on the road.

The Chargers return to Qualcomm Stadium next week to close out the 2012 season against the Oakland Raiders (4-11).

QUALCOMM STADIUM (12/20/2012) A stellar season comes to a disappointing end after the San Diego State Aztecs (9-4) fall to Brigham Young (8-5) at the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl. The Aztecs held a 6-3 lead going into the fourth quarter, but three turnovers turned into 20 unanswered points for BYU putting an end to a seven-game win streak.

BYU leads the all-time series 27-7-1

After earning their first conference title since 1998 and a third consecutive bowl berth, San Diego State (9-3; 7-1 MWC) will close out the 2012 season against long-time rival BYU (7-5). It will be the 36th meeting of a series that dates back to 1947. The Aztecs will be looking for their first win over the Cougars since 2005.

San Diego Football Weekend Review

 
Warhawks win 2012 CIF D-III State Championship
 
CARSON, CA (12-15-2012) The Madison Warhawks (14-1) came back from a 21-0 deficit Saturday to win their first state championship in school history. Senior running back Pierre Cormier rushed for 272 yards and three touchdowns to help rally his team to a 38-35 victory over Marin Catholic. The San Diego section has boasted at least one state champion for six consecutive seasons.

QUALCOMM STADIUM (12-16-2012) For the first time since 2003, the San Diego Chargers (5-9) will end the season with a losing record after falling to the Carolina Panthers (5-9) 31-7. The Chargers travel to New Jersey next week to take on the New York Jets then return home to host the Oakland Raiders in the final game of the season.

Madison and Santa Fe Christian will be looking to end their 2012 seasons as the state champions of their division. If either team comes away with a victory, it will be the sixth consecutive season that a San Diego Section team won a state bowl game.

Paopao wins 2012 Silver Pigskin


BALBOA PARK (12/11/2012) Oceanside quarterback Israel "Tofi" Paopao was named the 2012 Prep Pigskin Report Silver Pigskin Player of the Year. The announcement was made during KUSI's annual Silver Pigskin Gala at the San Diego Hall of Champions.

Paopao led Oceanside to the 2012 CIF Division II title and finished the season with 2661 passing yards and 24 touchdowns.

Also up for the award was Madison running back Pierre Cormier, Poway cornerback Derek Babiash, Horizon receiver Darren Carrington, Jr., El Camino running back Justin Williams, and Otay Ranch receiver Chris Martin.

Chargers barely hanging on to playoff contention

After picking up the first regular season win at Pittsburgh in team history, the Chargers still have a shot at the last seed in the AFC Playoffs. They need to win all three of their remaining games and get some help from the opponents of other teams in the hunt. While it may be a long shot, it's not impossible.

USD Toreros repeat as PFL Champions

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (12/01/12) For the second consecutive season and the fifth time in school history, the San Diego Toreros (8-3; 7-1 PFL) earn the Pioneer Football League championship.

The Toreros share the title with Butler and Drake who also finished 7-1 in PFL play. It's the second three-way tie in league history.
